Safe At Last

On Thursday, January 12th, 2012...the NBSPCA seized another 45 dogs from neglect and abuse. 26 of those dogs have come into the care of our shelter. It was difficult to make space for everyone. But as usual, our volunteers, staff and foster parents showed the love and committment that they have for these little souls who need us so much.

Zola, a little pomeranian mix, was pregnant when she came to us. Just how pregnant, we weren't really sure. Until 2 days after she found comfort and safety with her new foster family...when she gave birth to 4 little girls and 1 little boy.

Zola is one of the lucky ones. She has a second chance. A chance to learn what the feel of grass under her feet feels like. How sweet a warm cuddle can be. The joy of treats and kisses and having her belly rubbed by people who love her. Her babies will never know what the inside of a cage looks like. And they will never have years of sadness and despair like their mom.

Please help others like Zola, and Suzabelle, and Betty and Janis....report puppy mills. It might not make a difference in your life...but it will make ALL the difference in theirs.

Last month, the NBSPCA seized almost 200 dogs in 2 seperate incidents. That's ALOT of dogs!! And even though, I'm a cat and I think that dogs are inferior...I would never ever want them to suffer. So I am so grateful to the NBSPCA inspectors and our team of volunteers from the Oromocto SPCA who gave many many hours of their time to help vaccinate, deworm, process and make all 189 of these canines comfortable. Our shelter alone took in over 70 of these wonderful souls. And I'm happy to report that they are all doing well!!

Take a look at the faces in these pictures...those are the faces of some of the most caring, amazing people that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. We are lucky that the A-Team is our team!!

Hope Comes in Many Forms

First things first...I need to introduce myself. My name is Mrs. McCave. You can call me Mrs. McCave. I am the new office cat. A little while ago, Agatha was adopted and I sneaked my way into the new position. I'm pretty good at it but I'm still learning. One thing I've managed to figure out perfectly is how to get little pieces of the girls' lunch. The rest will follow.

Secondly, I want to tell you all about something pretty amazing that happened recently. Some wonderful people who are part of The Meeting Place Church got together and decided to raise some money for us after we had a theft here in the summertime. Many Many people stepped up to help us after that theft, and we are SO grateful. What made this particular donation so special was that these amazing people, are homeless. Homeless people looking out for homeless animals. It touched us to our core.

So to return the kindness, the staff at the shelter decided to surprise these amazing men and women. They took pizza and pop and ice cream and spent the evening talking and getting to know these angels. There were tears and laughter and so many Thank You's.

But honestly...we took away so much more from this experience than just the monetary part of it. These angels gave us back our hope. Sometimes, hope comes in funny ways...sometimes in a used jar of honey garlic sauce filled with change.

Did you know that when you adopt a dog...you save 2 lives? The life of the dog you have adopted, and the life of another dog who is waiting. It's a win/win situation....for you, for the dog, and for us...because we get to help more orphans who need us.

We have alot of dogs here right now. WAY too many. Of course, as a cat, I think one is too many. So I've decided to overthrow the staff and drop the adoption fees to only $75. Maybe that will help get some of these dogs out of here. I'll just have to keep an eye on the girls...they're bound to just fill the place up again with more dogs. My work here is truly never done....

July Success!

We had a wonderful July this year! It was busy as usual, with 59 cats and kittens finding their way to the shelter in need of care and attention and a second chance. And because of our campaign to get as many adult cats and kittens into new homes during that month...I am proud to say that 61 of them were adopted by new, loving homes!!
We are so excited and proud! Now on to August...
The work never stops...the door rarely closes...and our hearts never shut down. There are still so many that need homes...
Maybe August will be my lucky month. :)

Summer Heat + Dogs in Vehicles = Tragedy

The summer heat has finally arrived. I love summer....lounging in the window, basking in the sun, the cool breeze of the air conditioner....but the reality is that every single year...dogs die because they are left in vehicles in the hot sun.

Many people just don't realize how quickly the temperature can rise in a very short time inside a car. It's extremely dangerous...and more often than not...deadly.

If you see a dog in a car during the summer, even if the windows are rolled down a little, the situation can turn drastic in just a few minutes. Please do not walk away...monitor the situation and if the dog is in distress...please call your local shelter or police station. It literally could mean the difference between life and death.

Milo-A Success Story

For 6 months, Milo lived at our shelter, waiting for the right family to come and fall in love with him. The staff and volunteers already loved him....we knew how incredible he was...and now...a whole family knows too!! Milo was adopted last week after spending almost 10 months in a shelter environment...4 months at the Saint John Animal Rescue League before coming to us.

We are so excited and proud and grateful all at the same time. Excited that Milo has graduated to a family of his own...proud that we had a part in helping him become the wonderful canine that he is today and grateful to his new family who were able to see exactly what we all saw...a dog with so much love to give to the people he loves!

It's moments like these that keep us all doing what we do...loving our job, caring for the animals who come to us, and knowing that we're making a difference.

Thank you to everyone who volunteers, donates, and adopts...because of you...dogs like Milo have happy endings too.

Good Manners=Good Dogs

We've been running classes for several years now for dogs. We like to call them Manners Classes. It makes sense that if your dog has good manners, they're a better part of your community and your family. (Cats don't have this problem...we're always good mannered).

To date...we've helped hundreds and hundreds of families teach their dogs how to be good citizens. And now...we want to make it even easier...we want to make sure that all dogs have a chance to attend class. So we've come up with a plan...

From now on...all dogs adopted from the Oromocto and Area SPCA and the Fredericton SPCA will be eligible to take the classes for only $50! We want to make sure that these special dogs have every opportunity to become special members of their new family.

Sometimes, it's about being proactive instead of reactive.

Gunner and His Ears

This is Gunner. He's a shepherd mix who has been living with us for a couple of months now. He came to us with raging infections in both of his ears. His "people" obviously didn't take him to a veterinarian to get him help. So we did.

With the help of our Yelp for Help Fund, we were able to have both of Gunner's ears operated on. That was a month ago...and now...he's feeling much better. Well enough that he has started to play with the other dogs here at the shelter.

We are so happy that we were able to help him. Now we just have one thing left to do...and that's to find him a home with people who will love him as much as we do.

Sometimes, I find it truly amazing that animals like Gunner, loving, sweet, and forgiving, find themselves with no home too call their own. Even me.

I wish we could talk so that we could tell all of the people here at the shelter how much we appreciate them. I hope that they know.

To all shelters and their staff and volunteers...thank you! Even though we don't have words to say it...you are appreciated!

A Great Day!

Every day is a good day when animals find a new home. But some days...are GREAT days! Days like today...when one of our long-time, senior residents finds a home.

Tracker, our senior german shepherd, was adopted today and is on his way to his new home in PEI. His new family understands that he needs a retirement home. That he has tons of love to give but just needed the right people to give it to. We think he found that.

Thank you to his new family who was willing to take a chance on an elderly dog. We hope that you love him as much as we do.

Puppies R Us

Who ever thought that I would get used to having a whole bunch of puppies around? Not me! But over the last few weeks, I haven't had much choice. We've had litter after litter, after puppy after puppy coming through our doors and finding new homes.

It started with a call from the Bathurst SPCA saying that they needed help because they had too many dogs. The staff and foster parents jumped into action and decided that we would help out and take 9 of the babies into our care to find them new homes. Then several calls from the NBSPCA with a single puppy and then a litter of 8 little ones who had been found in a box. Once again...our foster parents jumped at the chance to help.

Thankfully, all of the puppies have found homes except for the last litter of 8 who are just now ready to be adopted. They're cute little babies. I hate to admit it. And I'll deny it if you repeat it to anyone else.

It's a great feeling to be able to help. And an even greater feeling to see a family find their new companion. That's why we're here. Because they need us.

Volunteer Extraordinaire!

Meet Diana...she's one of our amazing angel volunteers. She has been helping to save lives here at the shelter for a long time...about 6 years!! She helps in the shelter when we need her, she collects all of our penny cans and rolls the money to help low income families get their cats spayed or neutered and most importantly, she is a foster parent to animals who need some extra special love and care. Over the years, Diana has fostered countless cats and kittens, dogs and their puppies and even animals who are recuperating from very serious surgeries. Just in the last year, she has helped a dog named Brooke who had to have her leg amputated and right now, she is fostering a dog named Ziggy who had been hit by a car and had to have surgery on his leg.

I know you can tell that we think Diana is incredible. And now...other people know it too. Last week was Volunteer Appreciation Week, and Diana was one of only 8 people to recieve the United Way Outstanding Volunteer Award for 2011. She deserved it. And we're proud and grateful that she has picked us.

Without her...our shelter would not be the same. She is an integral part of our team. And we love her.

Diana...2 Paws Up for being the amazing, big-hearted lady that you are! Thank You for all that you do.

Bad to the Bone!

Is it just me or is spring finally here?? The snow is almost all gone, the temperature is rising...and everyone wants to spend time outside...even me! But for some reason...the girls at the shelter weren't very happy about me getting outside. Is it my fault that someone left the front door open? Is it my fault if the second time, someone left the door open again?

I have to admit though...once I got outside...I was pretty scared. I couldn't wait to get back inside!

So...I guess I've decided that being an indoor cat is MUCH better than being an outdoor cat. Not as dangerous, or scary, or lonely.

Besides...if I wait here patiently...my new family will come in, meet me, fall in love, and adopt me...just the incentive I need to stay put!

Kitten Season has Begun!

It's inevitable...no matter how much we pray, cross our fingers, knock on wood...every spring kitten season arrives with a bang and alot of pregnant cats and kittens!!

I think at last count, we had 5 cats in our foster program who are either pregnant, just gave birth, or have had a litter of babies. And it's still early in the year! Yeesh! It's a good thing that our shelter has an amazing group of people who open their homes to these cats...can you imagine having to give birth and take care of your babies in a cage?

Week one...Done!

I have my first week as office cat/greeter under my belt and I think it went pretty well! After being mistaken for Hissy Elliott about a zillion times, people are finally beginning to realize that I'm not her...I'm me! I know they're big kitty paws to fill....but I'm doing a good job. I guess it doesn't really help that the staff has dressed me up like Hissy....same purple colored collar..same yellow microchip tag, same red heart tag....are they maybe trying to tell me something?

Anyway...I have to tell you..it's kind of fun wandering around the shelter, checking to see what the girls are eating for lunch (even though I don't really want any of it), sitting and staring at the 2 new little poodle mixed dogs and making them bark at me. Don't worry though...I sit far enough away from them that they can't get me...some people call it "teasing" , but I just call it "observing".

I did want to tell you a little bit about a new program that we have just started here...it's called the Barn Cat Buddies. If you can offer a safe haven for an undersocialized, friendly feline...this program is for you. All Barn Cat Buddies will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped before leaving the shelter. Introducing...

Hi everyone! My name is Agatha and I guess I should tell you a little bit about myself seeing as I'm going to be your new blogger!

I'm a 2 and a half year old spayed female kitty. I'm all black except for a few little white hairs under my chin. I have been with the shelter since last summer when I was found with my litter of babies, abandoned. I've been living here ever since, waiting patiently for my new home.

Days spent here at the shelter are, for the most part, quiet and relaxing. The house is cleaned every day, we get treats every morning, people visit and bring us toys and cuddle with us...and sometimes, one of us finds just the right people and we get to go home and live happily ever after with them!!! So...you can imagine my surprise when a few days ago...there was MUCH excitement going on and things were changing!

Hissy Elliot, who you all know quite well, came to me and told me something VERY exciting was happening! She was finally, after almost 2 long years, going to live with a family of her very own! "But, but...what about your blog? What about the office cat duties?", I said. And that's when she gave me the surprise of my life...

"I'd like you to take over", she said. I couldn't believe it. Me? Really? Did I think I could do it?

Well...as you can see...it didn't take alot of convincing. I've been the office cat for three days now and I think I'm doing a pretty good job. I greet people when they come in, get to share the girls' lunches (that's the best part) and even get extra snuggles during the day.

Don't get me wrong...I still haven't given up hope of finding a family of my very own...but for now...this is a pretty good deal!

Passing the Torch

Well...it's been fun. But this is my last blog...I AM GOING TO MY NEW HOME TODAY!!!! After 2 years of waiting, bumming food from the girls, greeting visitors, and being the amazing cat that I am...it's time for me to move on and start my new job as lazy house cat.

I'm pretty excited...and a little nervous. I'll miss everyone here at the shelter. And I know that they're going to miss me too. But I deserve this. I deserve to have a home of my own, with people of my own, and a window to sit in of my own.

I have decided to pass the job of office cat/blogger onto my friend Agatha. I think she'll do a great job. Please drop in to visit her and say Hi.

SNAP-A Burlesque Review

Hey...did you know that a whole bunch of animal groups are getting together to put on a really neat Burleque show? It's true...on May 7th..at the Ecole Sainte-Anne Theater in Fredericton. There are 2 shows...one in the afternoon and one at night so everyone can attend! And tickets are only $22.50 if you buy them beforehand.

And here's the best part...all of the proceeds are going to help a whole bunch of special animals. Animals right here at the Oromocto and Area SPCA (like me)...animals at the Fredericton SPCA who are homeless too. The Kindness Club...they teach kids how to be kind and how to treat animals properly so that they never end up homeless or abused. Ca-R-Ma..they're a group who helps feral cats by making sure they can't have more babies and making sure that they are healthy and warm and have full tummies. Chickadee Cat Club who is a group of people who like cats ALOT...and the Ferret Lovers Society of Atlantic Canada..they help ferrets who can't stay in their homes anymore by finding them new loving families.

So....as you can see...alot of deserving animals are going to be helped just by you going out and enjoying yourself by seeing a GREAT show!

So drop into the shelter and get your ticket!!! It's for a good cause!

Lyme Disease IS in New Brunswick.

This week we recieved a dog from the NBSPCA who had been found in pretty bad shape a few weeks ago. After a trip to the local veterinarian and some blood work, it was discovered that Huey has Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is caused by ticks who carry it and it can be debilitating with no treatment.

Huey is on medication and is doing VERY well! His message is clear...PLEASE talk to your vet about flea and tick medication! Do NOT buy over the counter products.

Spring is just around the corner...please help protect your companion!

Meet Chandler and Milo

We have 2 new canine friends that I thought you should all meet. Their names are Chandler and Milo and they used to live at the Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue. But now they live with us.

Chandler, the golden retriever mix, had been living at the Saint John shelter for just over 6 months and no one wanted to adopt him! We don't really understand why...he's so sweet and so friendly, and he loves everyone that he meets. I guess the right family just hasn't come along yet. We think that he might have better luck here. He definitely deserves it. So if you know someone who might be looking for a handsome, loving new friend...Chandler is here waiting!

Milo is a 1 year old mixed breed dog. He had been living at the Saint John shelter for a couple of months too. People kept overlooking him because he has SO much energy! But he's only young...and he wants to play. You'd act silly too if you didn't get enough exercise and attention every day. So we are working hard to make sure that Milo gets walked every single day, and at least 10-15 minutes of playtime and running around so that he can burn off some of that fun energy that he has. He really wants to find a family that has time to play with him...maybe even people who like to do dog sports like agility or fly ball....he would LOVE that.

So come and meet our newest additions. And tell all your friends to visit too. Together we can find these boys just the right home!

And along with all of the medical support that they give us every day...they also do a fundraiser for us each year. Imagine...it's even signed by Patrick Roy! That's pretty cool. Even for a non-sport loving kitty cat like me.

More Happy Updates!

Remember our bunnies? Grayson and Tanner? They had been living here for just over 8 months...sweet little fluffy guys. Well...they have FINALLY found a home to call their very own! And we are very very very very excited. It's so nice to know that they are now in a home where they will get lots of attention, and brushing and treats and love. They deserve it!

Remember Madison? She was one of my feline friends who had been living here for 1 year! Not as long as me...but she was second in line for the title. She has found her forever home too!

And remember Clayton? He was the 10 month old lab mix who had been living here for just over 5 months. He has found his new home too!!!!

So as you can tell...the weekend was amazing! Lots of smiles and hugs and good-byes. The best kinds of smiles and hugs and good-byes. :)

Million Penny Challenge-Update

I know it's been a few months since I've mentioned the million penny challenge. It might be because I've been so busy rolling pennies...or maybe just because I've been so busy watching everyone else roll pennies. Either way...I just wanted to let everyone know that we are almost at the $3,000 mark!! Wow...that's ALOT of pennies!!

So...we still have a little way to go to reach our goal. But I know that we can do it with your help. And just remember...every single penny goes into a special account that is marked for our "Yelp for Help fund". This fund helps us pay for special medical attention for cats like Polar, who needed his tail amputated. And for Benedict, our mastiff mix who needed a lump removed from his foot. Without your help...these special souls might not get the care they so desperately need.

So...remember...we can do this together. Every single day I see little miracles happening right here in this building...we can make this one happen too.

Happy New Year!

Hi everyone! 2010 is almost over and 2011 is just around the corner! A new year...time to start fresh. And because everyone else is busy making New Years resolutions...I thought I would make a few of my own.

For starters, I've decided to be much more patient. I promise not to get too upset when it takes the staff a long time to share their lunch.

I'm also going to be friendlier. I promise not to hiss at new cats and dogs when they first come into the shelter. I really must learn to share my "home" with those less fortunate.

I will respect others property. I will not put all of the pens on the floor and sit in the box of calenders on the desk.

I will not be as curious and blame the staff when I get locked in places I should not be in the first place.

I will try to be more active and greet the visitors instead of lounging in my bed all day.

I think that pretty much covers any of my "bad" habits. It's going to be a long road...but I can do it. And if I don't...well...the staff and visitors will love me anyway. I'm just that special. :)

Polar

We have a new friend at the shelter that I would like to tell you about. His name is Polar, and he came to live with us yesterday afternoon. As you can see from his picture, he hasn't had the easiest life.

It all started when the girls got a phone call from a kind lady who had found an injured cat eating birdseed outside her door. She knew he was badly injured and VERY hungry and she knew she had to get him help as soon as possible. The girls told her to bring him to us right away, and they called Dr Grant at Oromocto Vet to let her know that they would be bringing him over as soon as he arrived. I didn't get to even say Hi when he came through the door because he was taken right over to see the doctor!

Poor Polar! Not only had he scratched his ears til he bled, not only did he have a HUGE gash on his forehead that had to be stitched up...but he also had to have some surgery right away. His tail had somehow become mangled and couldn't be repaired so there was no choice but to amputate it.

He's doing pretty good! He was soooo hungry though. I'm looking forward to being allowed to meet him soon. I was told I have to wait til he feels alot better though. He's still a little traumatized from being on his own and having to fend for himself. The good news is that he is loving the attention he is getting from the girls...and he is even purring when he gets his cuddles.

I am so happy that he was rescued and brought to us. I'm even happier that we have a place like this where we can all be safe and cared for. Cats like me and Polar...we're the lucky ones.

A Bittersweet Goodbye

Two long years have gone by since Homer and Angel, our ring-necked doves came to live with us at the shelter. Over that time, they had become part of the shelter family...greeting visitors, charming children, and surprising everyone when they laughed. They even put up with me and the other cats when we climbed on their cage to watch them (and maybe drool just a little).

Well...today we said Goodbye to Homer and Angel when they went to live in their new home. A very good friend of the Oromocto and Area SPCA recently lost her beloved dove and when she called us to say she would like to adopt Homer and Angel, we didn't hesitate to say Yes! We know that they will have the VERY best of care and love. And even though we know that they were happy living with us, we like knowing how happy they are going to be for MANY years to come with Kim!

So...next time you come in to visit...the bird cage will probably be empty. Waiting for the next souls who need us. Maybe I'll be allowed to name them this time!

Winter Flooding and our Safe Haven

Hi everyone...if you live in the Maritimes, you are very aware of all the rain and flooding that has been going on in our neck of the woods! Actually, even if you don't live here, you've probably heard about it. Imagine...the middle of December and it's flooding like it's the spring!

I'm one of the lucky ones...I have a warm, safe place to live and I didn't have to worry one bit about getting wet or cold or having no where to go. All of the animals that live here temporarily are the lucky ones. And we know it.

But as you know, there are so many homeless, abused and neglected animals who never make it to a place like this one. Animals who are cold every night, whose bellies are empty, and who need veterinary care for injuries and diseases. That's why it's so important to make sure that shelters like ours are always able to keep their doors open. So that there is always a safe haven for animals like me when we need one.

Please, please, please...donate to your local shelter. You would be surprised at how far the staff can make a dollar go. Every penny helps to keep the doors open, the lights on, and our bellies full. We appreciate every single act of kindness. We know what it's like to go without.

Christmas Party for the Animals!

Adoption Fun!

Heroes for the Homeless

Picture this....firefighters, paramedics, RCMP officers, police officers, and soldiers...coming together to support homeless animals. Well...that's exactly what happened when 13 local heroes came together to help raise money for us!

These amazing men, and Heather Grattan (an extraordinary lady and photographer) helped us put together our very first "Heroes for the Homeless" 2011 calender.

The calenders are now on sale and every single penny will go directly to help the orphans at the shelter. Trust me...you won't be disappointed!

I've even given you a sneak peek...this picture is of Adam, an Oromocto firefighter, with Gracie the border collie. Now you know you want to see the rest!

Home for the Holidays!

Christmas is almost here!! I love Christmas! We get lots of visitors who come in to the shelter who bring treats and cuddles and lots of smiles and love! Best of all...we get to see so many orphan animals (like me) go to new families during the holiday season.

In case you haven't been in to visit the last few weeks....there are alot of us cats and even kittens that are waiting for the "purr"fect family. So the girls here at the shelter decided to kick off the Christmas season with a little incentive to help all of the feline orphans here at the Oromocto SPCA. From November 29th to December 5th, we are once again going to waive our adoption fees in place of a by-donation fee...but don't forget...this still includes the first vaccines, deworming, spay or neuter and microchipping! What a deal!

If you were thinking that it's time to add a new friend to your home to keep you warm this winter....please come and adopt...you were right..it's time!!!

The Edmundston 13 turn 2!

I don't usually wish a Happy Birthday to dogs...it's not that I hate them..they just never bring me any cake! But today I am going to break my own rule and wish a Happy Birthday to not only one dog...but 13 of them.

Most of you will remember the news from 2 years ago when a box of 13 little 3 week old puppies were found near Edmundston in the middle of the road. A VERY kind person stopped and found the babies and called the RCMP. This person saved their lives. It was cold, and dark, and they easily could have died or been hit by one of the passing vehicles. Thankfully, they were transported to our shelter and fostered by an amazing foster mom who gave up 5 weeks of her life to care for ALL 13 of the babies.

Now...2 years later, these same little puppies are full grown, happy adult dogs who bring their families so much joy every single day. Many of them even meet regularly to play!

So..Happy Birthday to all of the Edmundston 13! Thank you for reminding us why we do what we do every single day.

Maybe next year on your birthday...you can bring me some of that cake!

Luv-a-Life Update!

Hi everyone...not only do I have good news..I have GREAT news! 3..yes I said 3.. of our long time feline residents just recently found loving forever homes!!

Rosie O', Flint and Wilson were all cats that had been with us for over 3 months just waiting for the right people to walk through the doors and fall in love with them...and it happened. And we are all so happy for them!

So to my friends...Merry Christmas...and I hope you have amazing lives filled with love. You deserve it!

Christmas is Coming!

I know..I know..it's only November and already that darn cat is talking about Christmas! That's what many of you are probably thinking as you read the title of this edition of my blog. But it's true....it's coming...and I just want all of you to be prepared. So...to help you out with a little of your Christmas shopping..I created some fantastic Pet Christmas Stockings in my free time. There are dog stockings and cat stockings (which I personally think are more important)...and each one of them is STUFFED with toys and treats! And...one of the best parts is...they are only $10 each. You could even pick up a new family member to go with that stocking.....one stop shopping!

Just think....you buy a stocking for your own pet...and that purchase helps a homeless animal get a second chance at a forever home of their own. I like to think of it as pets helping pets.

So....get on in to the shelter...they won't last "fur"ever!

Wanted-New Position

As many of you know...I am the resident blogger, office cat, supervisor, lunch taste-tester and Queen Bee. Thankfully, I am an incredibly good multi-tasker. I not only keep the shelter running smoothly but I do it all with a smile and a purr.

I have been with the Oromocto SPCA for almost a year and a half and while I have only held all of these positions for about 8 months...I was thinking that maybe it was time for a career change. Don't get me wrong...I love the shelter...I love the girls, the other animals and especially the visitors. But I keep hearing about another job that I think I would like to try.

So...I've decided to start job hunting. I'm hoping to give up my office cat status in place of a new lap cat position.

I think I'm quite qualified for the job. I like to be petted. I purr when I'm happy. I like treats. I love to curl up on cold winter nights with my family. And I am eager to learn and I work well as a team.

So...if anyone hears of any openings...please let me know. I can forward on my resume if needed. I can also give references.

PS...I work for minimal pay.

Catapult Fun!

If you didn't make it out to the Dogtoberfest Festival last weekend...I hear you missed a really good time! So did I...they allowed dogs so I stayed here.

I did manage to get ahold of a few pics of the amazing soldiers who braved the cold for almost 7 hours to make sure that the pumpkin catapult worked. These soldiers were professional, and friendly and very dedicated. They put alot of smiles on alot of faces that day!

So to the soldiers who built and manned the catapult on November 30th for Dogtoberfest...WE SALUTE YOU!

Grayson and Tanner

I want you to meet some of our longest residents here at the shelter. Grayson and Tanner are male angora bunnies that have been living with us since May. That's 6 months!! And while they are quiet and don't make alot of fuss...we all think that it's time for them to find a forever home!

As you can see from their picture...they are pretty hairy little guys. They need a home where they will get brushed ALOT. They also need to eat fruits and veggies and hay every single day. (I've tried that stuff they call hay and I'm REALLY glad that I don't have to eat it!)

Tanner and Grayson are also really good buddies so they have to go to a home together. Apparently, rabbits get very sad, just like people, when they are seperated from their best friend.

So...maybe you should come in and meet them. They really just need a chance to show you how sweet they are. They are even good with cats and dogs!

Did you know that all across North America, shelters are celebrating next week? It's National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week and we hope that you come in and celebrate with us!!

On Sunday (weather permitting), we will be having a free bbq to say thanks to everyone who volunteers, adopts and donates! Come by from noon to 3pm and get a bite to eat and visit with the staff and animals.

All next week we will be holding a Pet Photo contest. Drop your pet's cute pictures off at the shelter for a chance to win a cat or dog bed filled with goodies.

Visit Sobey's, Pawsative Rewards, Shoppers Drug Mart, Canadian Tire and Giant Tiger (all in Oromocto) and donate something from our wish list. There will be special boxes set up in each location.

Visit the shelter for specials on microchipping and meet some of our Luv-a Life cats. There will even be a special art corner for kids to show us their talent.

Without animal shelters...there would be many hundreds of thousands of homeless animals. I would be one of them! Next week....let's all show out appreciation for the shelters in our areas. And for the hard work they do...saving lives one at a time.

Dogtoberfest Festival

I hope that you already have this date marked on your calender....October 30, 2010! Cause that's the day that us and the Fredericton SPCA are joining forces to have a "haunting" good time together!

From noon to 4pm this Saturday at the Bucket Club..there is going to be a Dogtoberfest Festival with LOTS of fun things for the whole family to take part in.

There will be a haunted mini-golf, games, a bbq, pet pics, and the best thing ever...a pumpkin catapult!

I really wish I could go. But I have to stay behind at the shelter to make sure that everything runs smoothly. Without me....things just might fall apart. SO...I hope that all of you get a chance to go to the Bucket Club and have lots of fun! If you happen to get some pictures of the great time that you had...let me know...and I'll share them on here. Busy Autumn Days!

As you all know...October is Adopt a Shelter Dog month. (Don't worry...I'm not jealous...June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month). And we've been doing lots of fun things here at the shelter this month.

We had the Rubber Duck Derby which helped raise over $1500 for the shelter. We're also having a coloring contest, a raffle for a HUGE dog bed filled with tons of stuff, an essay contest in the elementary schools, a Dogtoberfest festival at the Bucket Club at the end of the month...AND...we have special trick or treat boxes so that kids can help raise money for the orphans at both our shelter and the Fredericton SPCA. It makes me tired just thinking about it!!

You'd think that we would have our hands full with all of that stuff...but we also have a wonderful calender coming out VERY soon called Heroes for the Homeless. Every month is a different hero (firefighter, policeman, soldier, or paramedic) posing with a cat or dog. And they're all very cute! And I don''t just mean the animals!

We're also working on some special things for National Animal Shelter Appeciation Week which is November 7th to 13th.

AND to top it all off....our Pet Photos with Santa will be at Scott's Nursery on November 27th from 10am to 3pm and at Pawsative Rewards on December 4th from 10am to 3pm.

So much to do....so little time. Maybe...if you have some time to give to help out with any of these upcoming events...you could call us at the shelter. 446-4107 Just ask for Tracy...she's my assistant. I'm sure I can find you something to do to help us out!

Did you know that kids can help homeless animals in a BIG way this Halloween??

Trick or Treating is taking on a whole new meaning in the Oromocto and Fredericton areas this year when kids collect money for the Oromocto SPCA and the Fredericton SPCA while they're collecting candy.

Pick up your special Halloween box, decorate it to be as scary as you want, and then on October 31st, help orphan animals like me recieve medical care, good food, and a second chance to live long healthy, amazing lives!

Rubber Duck Derby

Can you imagine what it looks like to see hundreds of yellow rubber ducks floating on the St John River?? Well....now's your chance to find out! We're having a RUBBER DUCK DERBY!

On October 2, 2010 we will be launching the ducks to see which one crosses the finish line first. And there's a $500 prize for the person who has bought the duck with the matching number! That would buy ALOT of tuna and cat toys! Special THANK YOU to Debbie Foley who sponsored this fun event! Two paws up Debbie!

So...my advice...drop into the shelter to buy your rubber duck ticket. Or you can find as at the Regent Mall (by Walmart) on September 24th and 25th and at the Fredericton SPCA Pet Expo on September 25th and 26th.

Puppies, puppies and more puppies.

Did you know that the Oromocto and Area SPCA helps out other shelters in the Maritimes quite regularly??Sometimes, when other shelters have too many animals, they will transfer them to our facility so that they have a better chance of being adopted. By working together, we can be so much more successful and save so many more lives.

Yesterday, the girls recieved a phone call from the Victoria County SPCA who desperately needed help with some dogs. They had a litter of 10 puppies and an adult dog that they no longer had space for and were hoping we could take. So after a flurry of phone calls to foster parents, we anxiously awaited the arrival of our new "tenants".

Bully..the adult boxer mix was pretty happy to get out and stretch after his 2 hour trip. He has settled in nicely. The 10 little husky pups all got bubble baths and dewormed and all piled together for a little snooze while they waited for their foster parents. Even I admit that they were REALLY cute! In another 3 weeks, they will all be ready for adoption. Tell all your friends!

So...thanks to the Victoria County SPCA for going the extra mile to make sure these dogs got a second chance...and thanks to the amazing foster families who have opened their homes to care for the babies!

Together we are unstoppable!

A wonderful reunion!

We had a wonderful reunion last week here at the shelter and I wanted to share it with all of you. I know that I've mentioned about microchipping before and why it's so important...but I want to tell you this story so you can understand just what an amazing tool a microchip can be to reunite animals with their families.

Peaches is a little black and white kitty who was adopted from our shelter just over a year ago. She lived with a wonderful family who loved her SO much. They kept her indoors, spoiled her, and made sure she had an amazing life. But in April, when a door was accidently left open, Peaches got outside and disappeared.

Peaches' mom and dad looked everywhere for her. But no luck. For months they didn't give up...but as time went one...their hope started to fade.

And then last week...someone found a little black and white cat hanging around their house. They called the Oromocto Animal Control officer and he went and picked her up to make sure that she was safe. Luckily, we had given him a microchip scanner so that he could check all the animals in his care. When he realized that the scanner was picking up a chip...he called to let us know that the cat he had found was named Peaches. The girls immediately called Peaches' mom and dad to let them know that she had been found!!!

You can imagine how excited they were to be reunited with their kitty who had been missing for just over 5 months!! Thankfully, Peaches is in good shape. She is VERY VERY happy to be home and safe.

So..I guess the moral of the story is to never give up....and have your pets microchipped. You never know when it might be your pet that is lost.

Brook is Back!

Adoptions!

We had a great weekend for adoptions even though it was a long weekend! We had several cats go home and some great dogs! Waffles, the yellow lab found a home and Cassidy, who had been with us for several months also found a forever home. We love when our orphans find loving, wonderful families. It truly makes our hearts happy.

I still have my paws crossed that one day it will be my turn. Until then...I have people to visit, blogs to write and hamburgers to eat...I hear a hamburger calling my name right now! Have a great week everyone.

Emerald's Happy Ending!

To those of you who visit the shelter regularly..you know that Emerald is a little black lab mix dog who has been with us since February of 2010. She came to us from a home where she had to compete with many other dogs and cats for food and attention, and to top it all off...she was pregnant. So off to foster care Emerald went and there she was able to give birth to her babies and learn that love was something she was going to get lots of from now on. Because she is so shy..it took her a long time to learn to trust again. And even now...after 6 months...she is still extremely shy with people that she does not know.

Of course, everyone here at the shelter loves Emerald VERY much. She has become part of our hearts and we cross our fingers every day that her turn for a forever home will come soon.

And today is that day!! Emerald is going home with her new people this afternoon and we couldn't be more excited!

We know that it will be bittersweet....it's hard to watch them go when we love them so much...but we know that Emerald deserves to have an amazing wonderful forever family!

Brook-My Story Part 3

Furry Friends for the Food Bank!

Did you know that here at the shelter we have Turkey, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Toffee, Carrot Cake, Macaroni and Cheese, Hershey and Oreo? Sounds like a yummy meal....but it's really just the names of some of the wonderful cats waiting here at the shelter for new homes!

So...in celebration of these amazing orphans...we have decided to help another wonderful organization in our community who gives back to those in need. The Oromocto Food Bank is currently in need of school supplies for children of families who need a little extra help at this time.

Starting today, August 25th til September 8th...we will be offering a $10 discount on every single cat adopted if you bring in a donation of school supplies for the food bank.

Not only will you be saving a life...but you will be helping a child in need.

And what better feeling is there in the world?

Brook-My Story Part 2

Hi everyone...I know it's been awhile since I posted to let you know how I've been doing. But I've been spending lots of time relaxing and recuperating since my operation.

My foster mom says that I am an amazing girl. I have fit into her home just perfectly and I am up and around and walking with no problems at all. I even sneak up and down the stairs when no one is looking.

The girls at the shelter are eager for me to come and visit..so when I have some free time..I will come in so that they can get some new pics of me to share with you. I want to thank everyone who sent me good thoughts. They definitely helped!

Brook-My Story

Hi there. My name is Brook. I am a rottweiler mix that came to the shelter on July 28, 2010. My good friend Hissy E. has kindly allowed me the use of her blog so that I can tell you my story. Well...part of my story..because it hasn't really ended yet.

I think I'll start my story shortly before I came to the shelter...it's as good a place as any. You see...I had a home at one time. I wasn't always an orphan. But circumstances beyond my control led me to a long road...all alone..and a kind animal control officer who came and got me and brought me here. When the girls here met me...they noticed that I had a limp and they were concerned enough to take me to the veterinarian and have my leg x-rayed. I'm really glad that they did. Because they quickly realized that I was in pain. My elbow had been dislocated quite a long time ago and no one had ever helped me before. Now...we had to decide what the best way to help me was. After another x-ray to make sure that my other front leg was ok...it was decided that the best treatment would be to remove the bad leg so that I wouldn't have anymore long term pain.

I admit...it's a little scary. Next week, I am going to have the surgery done and then I get to go stay with a wonderful foster family until I am fully healed. It's going to cost alot of money to have my leg removed...but everyone here at the shelter has fallen in love with me and they know that I am worth it.

So...in 7 more days..I will be a changed lady. I will make sure that I keep you updated on my progress. Please keep me in your thoughts and if you'd like to come and visit me before my operation..I'll be here...waiting.

Spotlight on Special Cats

For the month of August, I have decided that cats like me should get all the attention! They call us Luv-a-life cats because we are in a special club..a club that's only for cats that have lived here at the shelter for more than 3 months. I must be the president of the club by now! I've been here for 1 year and 2 months!

So...to put the spotlight on me and my buddies Madison, Scabber, Cinder, Jazz, and Cupcake...I have decided that our adoption fee is only going to be $40. And don't forget...this fee includes our vaccines, deworming, spay or neuter, microchipping...and a lifetime of cuddling, love and fun! It doesn't get much better than this!

So...get in your cars and get down here to the shelter. I will be waiting....unless I find a home.

Please Please Please Please....let us all find homes. It's my biggest wish.

Desperately Seeking Foster Families

Have you ever thought about helping homeless animals on a more personal level? I have a way you can help...and get hands on cuddling at the same time.

We are currently looking for new foster families who can help us care for young litters of kittens and pregnant mother cats until they are ready to find homes of their own. It's an easy process...you fill out an application, we visit your home, and then when we have orphans who need a place to go..we call you! We even supply everything you need.

This truly is a life-saving program. We currently have a pregnant mom cat who is patiently waiting for a foster home. We really hope she doesn't have her babies until we can find someone to care for her....giving birth in a shelter is not the ideal situation. Maybe you could be the one?

Please help us to save more lives...the love you get back will be worth every minute you give.

Heroes for the Homeless

I am so excited to tell you about our new fundraiser that we've started working on this week! After a couple of years of planning and talking, we are finally doing another calender...but this one has a little bit of a twist. It will feature local firefighters, soldiers, emts, and policemen posing with cats and dogs. We are calling it.."Heroes for the Homeless"

We have already started recruiting and we have completed 6 of our photoshoots. Heather Grattan, our photographer, has taken some beautiful pictures and we are excited to see the end result.

The calender will go on sale in September and we think that it will be a HUGE hit.

The pictures are top secret right now...but I managed to sneak to one of the shoots and get a few pics of my own. Sorry...I can't show you any of the final shots...I'd be in alot of trouble...but this will give you a little taste of how fun it was.

Do you know that we still have 5 angora bunnies that are looking for "fur"ever homes? Have you ever met an angora bunny? They are the softest, cutest, most lovable rabbits in the whole world. Alot of people who have come to visit us think that they look like little stuffed animals. They love kids, and they get along with other animals too...cats and dogs!

If you have ever thought that maybe a bunny would be a great pet for you...now is the time to adopt! We are dropping our adoption fees for a short time....one bunny $50. and if you would like to adopt a bonded pair $80. And don't forget...these guys are already neutered!

If you have questions about the care and feeding of angora rabbits..please call the shelter or drop in and the girls here would be happy to talk to you about them. They're pretty smart, you know.

So..fingers crossed that these guys will find homes quickly. They've been waiting an awfully long time.

Canadian Tire Car Wash and BBQ

On July 24th, Canadian Tire hosted our summer car wash and BBQ fundraiser. We raised $1100 for the orphans and a wonderful time was had by everyone! We want to sincerely thank all of the volunteers who helped to make this event such a success. To all of our military member car washers...Thank You! To Michelle, Nick, Kai and Riley...you are the best! And of course, to Canadian Tire...we are so incredibly grateful for your kindness and support. We hope to see you again next year!!

Oromocto Veterinary Hospital

Almost every single day we have new cats, kittens, dogs, puppies and small animals coming to us for shelter, medical care, love, and the chance to find a new home. Thanks to amazing volunteers, staff and foster parents...we can provide these things. And thanks to the truly incredible people at the Oromocto Veterinary Hospital....we can go above and beyond to help the animals who come to us injured, abused and badly in need of medical attention. For more than 12 years now, we have worked hand in hand with the staff at OVH and they have become our friends and our life-savers.

From daily spays and neuters, to medications, to life saving procedures such as eye removals, hip surgeries, xrays, and around the clock care...they do it all! We can always count on them at a moment's notice and they truly care about each and every one of the orphans that they see on a daily basis.

Without the staff at Oromocto Veterinary Hospital...we would not be able to save as many as we do. They are angels.

So...Dr Speizer, Dr Grant, Dr Legge, Dr McLellan, Kim, Cindy, Brenda, Bethany, Jay, Carol, Jen, Sarah, Jerrica and Jordan.....THANK YOU! We appreciate every single thing that you do for us. We are proud to call you friends.

People Coming Together!

I just have to say....when the going gets tough...the most wonderful people in the world get together and make sure that things get better. On Friday, as you read in my previous post, our canned cat food cupboard was bare. We only had about 10 small cans left...which wasn't going to go very far considering how many cats and kittens we are feeding right now.

So....myself and the staff sent out a plea to all the amazing people in our community. Paula Breckon with Capital FM radio even helped by mentioning it on her afternoon show on Friday. Our facebook members helped by sending it to all their friends as well....and by Friday afternoon...the food started to come in!

So many smiling faces walked through our doors on Friday and Saturday with canned food for the orphans! We couldn't stop saying Thank You!!

So..because of you...the cupboard is no longer bare! Because of your generosity, your compassion, your kindness....there have been smiles all weekend!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! We cannot say it enough. We are truly grateful.

Empty Bowls

I need a favor. From you....and hopefully all your friends. As you all probably know, because we have to live here at an animal shelter (temporarily, of course), we look forward every morning to getting our treat of canned cat food. It is the tastiest part of the day!

Well...I overheard the girls talking this morning about how there aren't many cans left...10 small cans is the rumor. I have to make sure that the cupboards get filled again quick! We have so many moms with kittens that depend on that food! Not to mention...all of the other orphans who would be so disappointed.

So...here is what I was thinking...if everyone was able to bring in just one or two cans....it would fill the cupboards again!!

I hope that with all the huge hearts out there...you can help us. We would be so grateful. We would even exchange kitty cuddles for your help.

Shelter Chit Chat

It's been a few days since I've last posted. It's been so busy here!! On Monday night, we had our first Puppy Play Group and it seemed to be alot of fun! Of course I didn't join in, I just watched out the window...but there was lots of running, playing, chasing and tumbling. And even though it rained, none of the puppies complained.

This weekend we have another fundraiser planned. The Oromocto Canadian Tire will be hosting a car wash and BBQ to help us raise money for the orphans here at the shelter. We're also going to be selling rubber ducks for the big Rubber Duck Derby coming up in October. I hear through the grapevine that there will be hundreds of ducks floating up the Saint John River and whoever's duck is the fastest wins a great prize! That sounds like so much fun! I hope that I get invited.

We have had lots of adoptions over the last few days...more kittens, Stallone, BB and Shirley (3 adult cats), and even a couple of dogs..Coral and Callum. YAY!

The best days are always the ones that end in finding forever homes for my friends. There is no better feeling in the world than the happiness of seeing one of them leaving with their new family. Someday..it will be my turn. Until then...my job here keeps me happy. Well..my job and lunchtime with the girls.

Actually, I think I hear them in the kitchen now! Gotta go see what I'm getting today...to all my fans...HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Kitty-Palooza a HUGE Success!

Kitty-Palooza has one more day to go..but as of this morning..we have found homes for 14 kittens in the last 5 days! Not to mention the adult cats that found homes this week! We are very excited as this has freed up room at the shelter and at our satellite adoption, Pawsative Rewards, for kittens that have been waiting in foster care. This time of year...we can use all the cage space we can get.

Our yard sale/dog wash/bbq was a success as well..we raised $1500 for the orphans, like me, here at the shelter. I want to give 2 paws up to the amazing volunteers who spent the day helping! They got up early and worked SO hard in the heat. Thank you to the girls at All About Animals too! They bathed and brushed dogs to help raise money!

It's been a busy and fun weekend so far...I wonder what today will hold?

Another Happy Ending

We had a great adoption day yesterday! Kittens and dogs and even another one of our long time cat residents, Noah. I know that I've mentioned it in the past...but we get very excited when a cat like Noah gets to go to his new forever home.

We recieved an email from Noah's new mom this morning...she said..."Just wanted to let you know that Noah settled in to our house quite nicely…he was up purring in my face this morning to wake me up. The whole family loves him and he is wonderful." Isn' that great news? Congrats Noah..we're SO happy for you!

All of the staff and volunteers are getting ready for the yard sale this weekend. We have LOTS of stuff and you will for sure find some treasures amongst all the tables. We're starting really early..so get your money and your walking shoes on and be here by 8am on Saturday! I won't be awake that early...but I might make an appearance later in the day.

You can also bring your dog to the shelter on Saturday and have him or her bathed! The wonderful people from All About Animals will be here to make your furry friends beautiful and smelling wonderful!

Hope to see you all this weekend...whether it's for the yard sale, dog bath, or to adopt a new family member! We'll be here....waiting.

Kitty-Palooza

Did you know that this time of year we have soooooooooooooooooooooo many kittens as well as adult cats?? When the days get longer, unspayed female cats get ready to have litters of kittens and that's why most babies are born in the spring and summer. And while everyone loves the cute little faces and the snuggly little fur bundles...at shelters, every day is a struggle to find homes for each one that comes in. It's not easy. The combination of too many cats and kittens and not enough homes can be a deadly one.

The last month or so, we've been trying to come up with creative ways of getting people in to adopt. And many have found their homes...but when one leaves, there are two more to take their place. It's a never-ending battle. And it's becoming scary and stressful for the staff and volunteers. No one wants to have to even think about what might happen if some of these wonderful cats and kittens don't find homes.

So...now is the time to adopt. Now is the time to save a life. What better incentive can we give you than that? Ok..how about we waive the adoption fees in place of a donation? Does that help? Done! Now we just need you...it's the perfect combination. See you soon?

Ulti-Mutt Manners Class-Oromocto and Area SPCA

Does your dog need to learn basic manners? Sit, down, stay, how to walk nice on leash? Does your canine companion need some practice socializing with other dogs and people? Our classes are $100 and run for 6 weeks on Sunday evenings at the Oromocto SPCA. We only use positive based methods and we keep our classes small so everyone gets the attention they need.

Our next set of classes will be starting on July 25, 2010 here at the shelter at 6pm. If you're interested..please contact the shelter. Each class will only have 5 participants each.

Come out...have some fun...and train your dog at the same time!!

PLEASE leave your dogs at home!

I know that I've already mentioned this in a previous blog...but it seems like every summer we have to talk about it. With the blistering heat, come the inevitable phone calls to the shelter about dogs being left in vehicles with the windows either rolled up or only left open a crack. And every year, across Canada and the United States, there are dogs dying because of it.

Please, please, please, please....leave your dogs at home when it's hot outside. It only takes a few minutes for the temperature in your vehicle to reach fatal heights.

And if you see a dog in a car with the windows rolled up...please contact the local SPCA or the RCMP. They have the ability to get that animal out and to safety.

PLEASE LEAVE US AT HOME....OUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!!

Busy Weekend

What a busy summer weekend! All of the dogs have been lounging by their pools, soaking up the sun and being lazy..but me...I have no time for that! I have been greeting visitors, training our new summer student, Jessica and helping with adoptions! My work is never done.

I am proud to say that our little guinea pig, Drew was adopted to a wonderful home with 2 sweet little boys. She is going to have so many cuddles and kisses! I also found new homes for some kittens, and a dog and my friend Ginger the cat.

I hope there's some extra canned food in my bowl tomorrow morning...I deserve it!

HOT SUMMER MONTHS-COOL CATS

For the Oromocto and Area SPCA and other animal shelters across Canada, summer ushers in more cats and kittens that are in need of homes. In order to bring awareness to the issue of homeless cats and encourage more adult cat adoptions, the Cat Days of Summer campaign will include adoption specials during the month of July and August.

The month of July will kick off with an adoption special on all adult cats...we will be waiving our regular adoption fee and replacing it with a by-donation fee.Each cat's adoption fee includes a spay/neuter surgery,deworming, preliminary vaccinations, microchip ID implant and registration, identification tag and other special incentives.

Please help us save as many lives as possible this summer! Your perfect friend is just waiting for you at the Oromocto and Area SPCA

What Kids Can Do!

Kids are truly the future of the Humane Movement. This is a generation who is smarter, more aware and more empathetic than ever before. I get to see the most amazing kids who come into the shelter and give their time and love to each one of us here.

So I thought I would share a list of things that kids of all ages can do to help us or help their local animal shelter. Each moment, each touch, each act of kindness makes all the difference in the world.

1. See if volunteers are needed. You might get to walk dogs, brush and groom cats and dogs, help keep the kennels clean, feed the animals, help with paperwork in the office, or help with special events like walk-a-thons!

2. Collect supplies the shelter always needs, such as newspapers, blankets, dog and cat food and toys, books about animals and their care, pens, pencils, and office supplies, and almost anything else you could think of. Just give them a call to see what they need!

3. Make sure your pets have been spayed or neutered and encourage your family, neighbors and friends to spay and neuter their pets.
4. When someone you know says they are thinking about getting a pet, tell them about all the wonderful animals available for adoption at your local shelter!

5. Start a Friends of the Shelter club at your school or in your neighborhood. Everyone working together can do so much more than one person working alone. When things get going, local radio stations, newspapers, and television stations might want to do a story about your club!
6. See if you can raise funds for the shelter. Plan a car wash, a bake sale, or a raffle. Offer to walk people’s dogs or pet-sit when they go on vacation and donate the money to help homeless animals.
7. Start a Tag Awareness Drive in your neighborhood or at your school. Animal shelters spend lots of time and money trying to reunite lost pets with their families. If more cats and dogs wore I.D. tags, things would be a lot better!

8. See if the shelter knows of elderly or disabled people in your neighborhood who can’t care for their animals as well as they’d like. Ask if they need help with dog-walking or cat litterboxes.
9. If you are a Girl Scout or Boy Scout, dedicate one or more of your merit badge projects to an animal shelter or rescue group.

10. See if any of your school projects can be about an animal shelter or rescue group, spaying and neutering, animal cruelty, or pet adoption.

Don't you just love this image?? It really says it all. It perfectly describes what is going on in shelters all across Canada and the US. It's going on right now at our shelter! We have cats and kittens, dogs and bunnies. Sometimes it's hard to find space for everyone. Thank goodness for the girls here at the shelter, our volunteers and our amazing foster families. They do incredible things every single day...all because of their huge hearts!

So...when you're looking for a new forever friend...please visit an animal shelter near you. Remember this image. It may be light-hearted and cute...but it has a strong message. Sadly, there's no shortage of orphan animals waiting for a second chance. I know...I'm one of them.

Happy Tails-Hugs

A very good friend of mine was adopted and went to her new home yesterday!! And by friend, I mean, one of the cats here that I had to share canned food with in the morning. Hugs had been waiting for a new family for about 8 months so you can imagine how excited the girls were when she finally was picked! I know that they're always happy when one of us finds our family...but when it's someone who has been here for an extended period of time...it's super special.

Now...this means two things for me...the first is that I don't have as many cats that I have to compete with for my treats and attention for...second and most important..it gives me hope that my forever family is out there somewhere...I just have to be patient.

So....Hugs...we will miss you!! But we are so happy that you are in a loving home! Good luck and don't forget about us!

Summer Heat

I've heard some "mutt"erings over the last few days from my friends who come in to visit with me about how hot it is getting outside. Summer is definitely here. And every summer, along with the heat...comes the job of the SPCA and the public to make sure that people are informed about how dangerous it is to leave their pets in the car. Did you know that the temperature in a car, even with the windows left slightly open, can rise more than 10 degrees in just a few minutes? MORE THAN 10 DEGREES! WITH THE WINDOWS LEFT SLIGHTLY OPEN! That's incredible..and deadly. Every summer, pets die in cars. We wish you would leave us at home where it's cool and safe.

It's a great site that features fliers that you can print out and give to people, signs you can post in businesses, and even a page that you can send in a pic of you and your dog with a "My Dog is Cool" poster!

I think that with everyone's help...we can save some lives. If it's hot, and you see a pet in a car..please stop and assess the situation. Don't turn a blind eye. Call the RCMP or your local shelter. This summer...let's make a difference..together.

Tag that Wag

You know how important it is to make sure that your pets are properly collared, tagged and/or microchipped. Well, we do too and we're going to make it easy for all of you! On Saturday, June 26th, 2010...at the Oromocto Superstore, we will be launching our new "Tag that Wag" campaign.

The "Tag that Wag" kit will be available for a $35 fee....but it will help to bring you a priceless sense of security. The kit will include a microchip for your pet, a magnet that lists all of the numbers you need if you have to report your pet missing, a Rover kit which lists all veterinarians in the province, and a current photo of your pet. We hope that "Tag that Wag" will help to reunite lost pets and their families.

So join us on the 26th at the Oromocto Superstore! There'll be a bbq, pet photos, and the "Tag that Wag" kits.

Cats, Cats...and even more Cats!

If you've been in lately to visit us...you'll have noticed that there are alot of us fabulous felines in residence waiting to find new homes! I know that you guys are probably busy...life has a way of getting in the way of fun. But I was hoping that maybe..just maybe..if I gave you a really special incentive..some of you would come in and adopt one of us. So..for the next week...once again...we are dropping our usual adoption fees and asking for a by-donation fee on all adult cats. Don't forget...this still includes first vaccines, deworming, spay or neuter and microchipping! Can you really get a better deal anywhere else? We'll also throw in...a lifetime of love..and the promise to always think you're beautiful and amazing, no matter what!

Kibble Pet Food Bank

Did you know that some families are finding it hard to find the money to buy food for their pets? That makes me very sad. Especially when these families are also hungry themselves. People should never have to choose between feeding themselves and their cats and dogs. And that's why the girls here at the shelter decided that they were going to stop feeling sad about it...and do something to fix it.

Last summer, our shelter became the first shelter in New Brunswick to join the Kibble Pet Food Bank in conjunction with the NBSPCA. There were 3 human food banks in the province who also helped people with pet food at the time and we were so excited to be able to join them in this worthwhile cause. Now, there are 3 more shelters that have joined in too!

Because we have a wonderful feeding program with the Royal Canin company, we are able to use donations of food from the public to keep our Pet Food Bank running. We also supply blankets, collars, or bowls if necessary.

We have many programs in our shelter that are amazing. But this is truly one of the programs that makes our hearts happy. To know that we have helped someone in need not only feed their furry friend, but also help them to keep that pet in their home..it has been truly a labor of love. At this time, we are helping about 20 families every single month. And we will continue to take part in this program as long as it is needed.

So....if you have extra cat or dog food that you'd like to donate to the Kibble Pet Food Bank...drop it off to us! You will be helping a friend in need.

Microchipping-Permanent ID for your pet.

Did you know that I have a tiny little microchip under my skin that can help me get home if I'm lost? Sounds like science fiction...but it's not! It's real and it's saving lives almost every single day by helping animals get home where they belong.

A microchip is just a little bit bigger than a grain of rice and it's implanted under the skin with a special type of needle. It doesn't hurt much at all because it's done really quickly. It kinda felt like a little pinch and then it was over. Now, if I was to get lost and someone found me and brought me to a veterinary clinic or a shelter, the staff would scan me with a special hand held machine. My number, that only belongs to me, would show up on the scanner and when they called the microchipping company...they would know exactly who I was! And they would be able to call my family to tell them where I am! Amazing!

I have heard the girls here at the shelter say that they wish all cats and dogs had microchips. Then they would be able to reunite more animals with their families. Everyone loves a happy ending!

So....my recommendation....have your pets microchipped! It's one of the kindest things you can do for them!

Don't waste time...call the shelter now! They'll microchip your pet for only $25. Isn't the small cost worth the peace of mind you'll have knowing that your pet will have a better chance of getting home to you?

Update-Ripley

We always love hearing success stories from adopters...especially when it's about one of our long time or special needs orphans. Ripley was both. He had come into the shelter after having been seized by the animal protection officers with an ear infection so bad that he couldn't hear any longer. He lived here at the shelter for several months..waiting patiently for the right person to come in and fall in love with him. I am happy to report that Ripley has been adopted and his new mom says that he is fitting in perfectly!

He has new canine brothers and he gets to have special treats every single day! He goes for walks all the time and his ears have cleared up quite nicely!

The girls here at the shelter are very happy each time one of the orphans finds their forever home...it makes doing what they do worthwhile.

So...Thank You! to Ripley's new mom for falling in love with him and giving him the chance to know what a true home is really all about. And Thank You! to all of the families who come to the shelter to adopt...you are making a difference and helping us to save lives!

Amazing Super Hero Rescue!

If anyone has ever wondered how dedicated our animal protection officers are...here is proof! This black lab mix had fallen and was trapped on the side of a very steep cliff. One wrong move and his situation would have potentially turned lethal.

Enter Randy and Denis....super hero animal protection officers! With no regard for their own safety...they were able to climb up to the dog and lead him to safety. Now THAT is dedication!

We salute you Randy and Denis! And to all of the other animal protection officers in NB...we think you're amazing too! Thank you for what you do every single day....saving our lives...one orphan at a time.

Party Fun!

What a great anniversary day!! We had cake and punch and I even got presents! It was fun. I think we should find a reason to eat cake at least once a month. I'm still celebrating..so you can still bring me presents. I guess the only thing I'm missing now is a home to call my own. Maybe..for my anniversary week...my dream will come true.

Special People!

I wanted to take a little break from my party (what a surprise it was!!) to tell you about some more special people that I've met over the last couple of weeks. As you all know, we depend heavily on donations from the public to help us make sure that the orphan animals in our care have everything they need to be safe and happy. Especially the little extras that make the shelter not just somewhere where we wait to find families...but a place we can truly call home. At least until we find forever homes of our own.

Heather Porelle is a young lady who we think is truly amazing! For her birthday, she unselfishly asked her friends to bring gifts for the shelter animals instead of for her. They brought lots of fun stuff..toys and treats and canned food!! They even spent some time in the shelter cuddling and visiting with the cats and dogs and bunnies. I'm not sure who had more fun...the kids or the animals!

The other amazing group of people are the Fairley's Oromocto Open Wednesday Night Dart League. This is a group of people who were able to raise ALOT of money and supplies at their annual banquet this year! They brought in everything on our wish list and more! Our front lobby was packed with so much stuff...it was incredible!

Our heartfelt thanks goes out to these wonderful people. Without them and all of our other volunteers and donors, we couldn't take care of all of the orphans that come to us. We are truly grateful. Two paws up to Heather Porelle and her friends and to the Fairley's Oromocto Open Wednesday Night dart League....we think you are angels!

Now...back to my party and my cake. I have to keep an eye on the girls to make sure they don't eat it all. Any excuse to eat cake!

Scavenger Hunt Fun!

Want to have lots and lots of fun and help raise money to help orphan animals like me? You NEED to come and join us on Saturday, June 5th from 10am to noon to take part in our 2nd Annual Scavenger Hunt. It's SO much fun and great for the whole family!

It's easy...you pick up a pledge form at the shelter, raise some money, and then join us on Saturday. We'll give you a list of all the things you have to find. But be warned....it might not be as easy as you think but we promise it will be fun! If you promise not to tell...I will give you a hint...bring a digital camera...it might help you to earn some extra points.

There will be prizes for the teams who collect the most points and for the team that collects the most money.

You can't go wrong..spend the morning having a great time, AND raise money to help the homeless animals!

I'll be there!
